Marmot Village

Location: PASSO TONALE

The Marmot village is located at Valbiolo, easily reached on foot by a walk lasting one hour and a half, also by chair lift.

Once at the destination the youngsters can have fun with slides and games while the adults relax. If you’re observant and quiet you’ll also be able to see close up the numerous marmots that live on the slopes and which in summer bring our mountain alive with their calls. A little further down the park you will find a new artificial lake for a pleasant walk.

The chair lift is free for holders of the Val di Sole Guest Card.

Presena Glacier

Location: PASSO TONALE

Reach Paradise in just a few minutes? You can! At roughly 700 metres from the hotel you’ll find the departure station for the Paradiso cable car that will take you to the start of the Presena Glacier. There you can walk around the lakes and visit the First World War Tunnel.

Continue the excursion by taking the Presena cable car that will take you up to 3000m where you’ll have a 360° view of Adamello, Lobbie and Pian di Neve. A breathtaking panorama not to be missed. The glacier is a departure point for many walkers and for the famous Sentiero dei Fiori ferrata route equipped with a wire cable.

Both cable cars are free for holders of the Val di Sole Guest card.

Val Presena

Location: PASSO TONALE

Val Presena can be reached on foot starting from the hotel, just pick up the path at the sports ground, go along the “fitness trail” and follow the indications for Raseghe. The area is also set up for picnics and barbecues and can be reached in around one and a half hours.

Continuing along the same path you’ll reach “Tonale Beach”, a sandy area formed by the erosive action of the river that rises in Alveo del Presena and crosses the location. For a regenerating effect after your walk, dip your feet in the icy cold waters of the glacier.

The Maso Celesta Organic Agritur educational farm

Location: VELON

This is our family farm! The excursion most popular with kids but with adults too! Here you can touch the animals, feed the cows, pigs, donkeys or rabbits. See the cows being milked at the end of the day or watch the milk being turned into Casolèt cheese.

Children can make a little block of cheese with their own hands to take away with them. Besides the farm visits Maso Celesta is also a small restaurant where visitors can sample the dairy products made there, the most famous of which is the organic Casolèt or ricotta cheese. The products can also be purchased in the local products shop next to the hotel.

Barbecue in the woods

Location: VELON

Much enjoyed and very popular, our barbecue in the woods is second to none. A magnificent place in the midst of woodland, in Velon. A large area, next to the river Vermigliana, where you can play, relax and of course enjoy a lunch with our local products that won’t be quickly forgotten!

Those who want to can also reach the area on foot starting at the base of the Tonale and the walk will take around one hour and a half going and two and a half hours coming back.

Passo Tonale Bike Park

Location: PASSO TONALE

For those who love bikes and the adrenaline of racing downhill the Bike Park is the place for you! Located at 500 metres from the hotel in Valbiolo, the park offers 3 different blue, red and black runs suitable for all levels. The easier ones can also be enjoyed by families and children. At the park you’ll also find bike and protective equipment hire.

More downhill bike runs can be found at Ponte di Legno and Temù.

Forts of the First World War

Location: PASSO TONALE

Difficulty: MEDIUM

Walking time: 3 HOURS

An excursion to see the forts of the First World War. The route is circular and can be followed either on foot or by bike, taking in the forts of Forte Zaccarana, Caserme di Strino and Forte Mero.

An excursion suitable for all, which offers a splendid panorama.

S. Leonardo Lakes at Vermiglio

Location: VERMIGLIO

A location easily reached by car from the hotel. Excursion suitable for pushchairs. Besides the beautiful surroundings, the San Leonardo lakes offer everyone the opportunity to walk around the 3 lakes, inhabited by ducks and swans.

For the delight of the kids there are lots of games all around the walking path, so a good time is guaranteed!

Ponte di Legno

Location: PONTE DI LEGNO

Ponte di Legno is a typical mountain village just a few km from Passo Tonale and is easily reached using the cable car, which is around 700 metres on foot from the hotel. (In summer it’s free for holders of the Val di Sole Guest Card). Ponte di Legno is very well known for its pedestrian precinct with many shops but there is also a magnificent historic centre to admire.

The station where the cable car arrives at Ponte di Legno is also a good starting point for many excursions. If you’re in the area we recommend Valbione, with its lake and golf course, which can also be reached by the chairlift (at a cost) or on foot; Val Sozzine for a pleasant walk with the children, full of wooden sculptures and games, or the cycle path that runs to Vezza d’Oglio.

Val Sozzine

Location: PONTE DI LEGNO

Difficulty: EASY

Walking time: 2 HOURS

The walk to reach Val Sozzine is very pleasant and on level ground, also suitable for pushchairs. Just follow the cycle path that starts at the Ponte di Legno-Tonale cable car station in the direction of Passo Tonale.

At the end of the cycle path lies the park, with wooden sculptures and water trails to entertain the kids, while adults can follow the Kneipp course or relax on wooden deckchairs.

Case di Viso

Location: PEZZO

In the midst of the Stelvio National Park, in the municipality of Ponte di Legno, stands the ancient village of Case di Viso. Its mountain huts made of rocks, with wooden roofs and balconies and no electricity, provide a glimpse of bygone times.

An unforgettable walk through a small village that will remain in your heart. The walk is very easy but pushchairs are not recommended due to the cobblestone roads.

Lago dei Caprioli

Location: PELLIZZANO

Difficulty: EASY

Walking time: 1 H 30 MIN

A fabulous Alpine lake surrounded by mountains reflected in the crystal clear waters. Lago dei Caprioli is located at Fazzon, above the town of Pellizzano an can easily be reached by car. After leaving vehicles in the pay and display car park, the lake can be reached by means of a short walk.

The route is not difficult and it will take around 30 minutes to walk around the whole lake, the path also being suitable for pushchairs. The ideal place for a relaxing afternoon with the family.

Pejo 3000

Location: PEIO FONTI

Difficulty: EASY

Walking time: 1 HOUR

For lovers of high altitude we recommend you don’t miss a lovely visit to Pejo 3000 to admire the view over the valley from 3000m a.s.l. Leave the car in the lift system car park at Peio Fonti.

The cable car (free in summer for holders of the Val di Sole Guest Card) will take you to the heart of the Ortles-Cevedale group.

Pian Palù

Location: PEIO

Difficulty: MEDIUM

Walking time: 1 H 30 MIN

The path to reach the lake starts in Fontanino, in the municipality of Peio. Cars can be left there in the pay and display car park.

A walk lasting around 30 minutes will take you to Pian Palù, an artificial basin nestling between the mountains of the Stelvio National Park. The clear blue colour of its waters will take your breath away.

On reaching the lake you can then decide whether to continue the route around the lake which takes around one and a half hours or just enjoy the panorama and go back via the same path to the car park.

Deer and Roe deer wildlife area

Location: PEIO FONTI

The Stelvio National Park wildlife area allows you to get up close to deer and roe deer. Adults and children can observe the habits of these extraordinary animals, see how they live and how they behave. For an experience in contact with nature.

Sentiero dei fiori

Location: PASSO TONALE

Difficulty: HARD - FERRATA

Walking time: 5 HOURS

The Sentiero dei Fiori is a ferrata route equipped with a wire cable that retraces the route mapped out by the Italian Alpine soldiers in the First World War. It begins at Passo Paradiso and runs from Passo Castellaccio to Pisgana. Along the route you’ll encounter two metal bridges that will take your breath away.

We recommend hiring an Alpine guide to tackle the route, a complete ferrata kit will be necessary for this.

Rifugio Denza

Location: VERMIGLIO

Difficulty: HARD

Walking time: 2 HOURS 30 MIN.

The Denza rifugio (mountain hut) is located at the foot of the Presanella at an altitude of 2298m. To reach the departure point for the path you can follow the gravel road that runs from Velon to Forte Pozzi Alti.

From there with a walk of an hour and a half and a climb of around 400 metres you’ll arrive at the rifugio. Return is by the same route. Visitors can eat and stay overnight at the hut.

Rifugio Bozzi

Location: PEZZO

Difficulty: HARD

Walking time: 4 HOURS

The Bozzi rifugio (mountain hut) at an altitude of 2479m is located in the Valle di Viso on the borders between Lombardy and Trentino. It can be reached from various points, the easiest for guests staying at our hotel is to take the Valbiolo chairlift and on arrival follow the path that leads to Passo Contrabbandieri, from where fabulous views over Tonale can be enjoyed.

The path continues downwards into the Stelvio Nature Park towards Rifugio Bozzi. We recommend the return route via the same path or alternatively you can continue on to the Pian Palù dam in the municipality of Peio. From there the return to Tonale is by car (roughly 20 km).

The Valbiolo chairlift is free for holders of the Val di Sole Guest Card.

Rifugio Guido Larcher al Cevedale

Location: COGOLO DI PEIO

Difficulty: HARD

Walking time: 4 HOURS AND 30 MIN

The Cevedale rifugio (mountain hut) at an altitude of 2608m is located in the municipality of Cogolo di Peio. The path can be reached by means of an asphalt road leading to Malga Mare. Here the walking path begins for the rifugio which will take around 2 hours.

From here either make the return journey by the same route or continue via the Sentiero dei Laghi which skirts the lakes of lago delle Marmotte, lago Lungo and lago Nero as well as the Careser artificial basin.

Rifugio Vioz

Location: PEIO

Difficulty: HARD

Walking time: 6 HOURS

At 3535m, the Vioz rifugio (mountain hut) is the highest rifugio in the Eastern Alps and is located in the Stelvio National Park in Val di Peio.

To reach the path that leads to rifugio Vioz two ski lifts must be taken, one cable car and one chairlift which from Peio Fonti arrive at Doss dei Gembri at 2315m. This is where the path starts that gradually climbs up to the rifugio at 3535m and takes around three and a half hours to walk. The return journey will be by the same route.

Ski lifts are free for holders of the Val di Sole Guest Card.

Val di Sole cycle paths

The 2 nearest cycle paths to Passo del Tonale are:

  • The path in Val di Sole from Fucine to Mostizzolo and the path in Alta Val Camonica from Ponte di Legno to Edolo.
  • The cycle path in Val di Sole is mostly flat and suitable for families. The section from Mezzana to Mostizzolo is the one most recommended for families with children to be able to use the train+bike return service with the Trento-Malè-Mezzana Railway.

Holders of the Val di Sole Guest Card can use public transport free of charge (to be activated by means of the APP).

The cycle path in Alta Val Camonica meanders its way from Ponte di Legno to Edolo. The section recommended for families runs to Temù or Vezza D’Oglio.

Both paths offer bike hire at their start.

Cyclists

Cyclists are welcome at Sport Hotel Vittoria. Various routes start from Passo Tonale. For followers of the Giro D’Italia some of the famous stages can be tackled such as Passo Gavia or Passo Mortirolo. For the more adventurous, at the Passo there is a bike park or several mountain bike trails.
